Both Britten and Shostakovich wrote numerous works for the famous cellist and pianist Mstislav Rostropovich and his wife, soprano Galina Vishnevskaya, including The Poet’s Echo and the Seven Romances on poems of Alexander Blok. Both song cycles are based on Russian poems and are textbook examples of refinement and subtlety. As a bonus, this morning concert will begin with Shostakovich’s incomparable Viola Sonata, completed barely three days before his death.
