EN BACHC®AB represents both (Johann Sebastian) ‘Bach’ and ‘crab’. The crab is a reference to the ‘crab canon’, a compositional technique in which music is written in such a way that it can be played both forwards and backwards.
Although the cornerstone of the concert is Bach, who excelled at this technique, Zefiro Torna and Ensemble Variances take a wider view: they’ve fished through six centuries of music history, coming back with a full ‘crab cage’, and put together an amazingly varied programme.
The musical crab walk will be given visual form by the Flemish artist Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven.
