The Transit opening concert will bring
together old and new. Actually, the urge to experiment and innovate in new music
is not so different from the spirit of adventure with which ‘historical
performance practice’ makes early music come alive.
B’Rock, Flanders’ most exciting baroque ensemble, will ‘face the music’, playing brand new works composed especially for this production. You’ll enter a surprising sonic world in which gut strings, lute and harpsichord get a contemporary gloss. Each composer will add an element of their own to the baroque forces, from work for sho by Wim Henderickx and the vocal stylings of Reza Namavar to the electronic input from turntable wizard Matt Wright.

Reza Namavar
The music of Namavar is characterised by the
unexpected. By alienating the familiar, and letting it unravel, he questions
fixed ideas of the listener. His apparent frivolity is a complex construction
of surprising harmonic turns and melodic phrases. The capricious rhythm lends an
often restless character to the music, which is constantly discovering new
horizons, undiscovered islands of combinations never before tried.
Matt Wright
Matt Wright works as a composer, improviser
and sound artist at the edges of concert and club culture, his output
stretching from scores for early music ensembles and contemporary chamber
groups to digital improvisation, experimental hip hop and turntablism. As a
performer and researcher he works with turntables, laptops and surround sound
installations to create post-DJ, multichannel music that embraces hip hop,
avant garde and 'free' traditions.
Louis Andriessen
Louis Andriessen, a member of a famous family of musicians, is one of the most influential Dutch composer of his generation, not only because of the quality of his music, but also his excellence as a teacher. Andriessen’s large body of works defies any all-encompassing description, but there is a guiding thread running through it: a confrontation with tradition, which over the course of his career has increasingly had the nature of a dialogue.
Wim Henderickx
Wim Henderickx studied composition and percussion at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp as well as sonology at the IRCAM in Paris and the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. Inspiration from other cultures as well as use of electronics are recurring elements in his work. He teaches composition at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp and at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and is senior lecturer at the yearly summer course SoundMine for young composers at Musica, Impulse Centre for Music. He has received numerous national and international prizes, and in 2015 he became a member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Art and Science.

B’Rock Orchestra was set up in Ghent in 2005
on the basis of an urge for renewal and rejuventaion in the world of Early
Music. The selected international musicians specialise in historically
well-rounded performance practices. They distinguish themselves by their open
mind and flexibility of repertoire and playing style. In the choices it makes
for its concert programmes B’Rock combines established works of baroque
composition with the lesser-known repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries. In
addition, the orchestra pursues a bold and innovative programme policy in which
early and contemporary music meet and enrich each other.
