Tim Mariën’s sound world is unique in Flanders and far outside its borders as well. They must have realised this as well in Darmstadt, where he was awarded a Stipendienpreis or stipend award in 2010. In this portrait concert, the young Flemish ensemble Tiptoe Company will play his most important recent works and will add a world premiere. Using microtonal string instruments, re-tuned pianos and alternative playing techniques, Mariën balances between delicacy and exuberance, poetry and effervescence. Different in tone, but equally inventive is the music of the young Dutch composer Nicoline Soeter. A world première of hers will round out the programme nicely.

Tim Mariën
Tim Mariën started composing on his
own, after discovering avant-garde composers such as Pierre Henry, Luigi Nono
and Karlheinz Stockhausen in his teens. During his studies in musicology at KU
Leuven, he researched Harry Partch’s ‘extended just intonation’. Mariën writes
on commission of several ensembles, for which he often manipulates or re-tunes
instruments. In 2010 he received the Stipendiumprize for composition during the
international summer courses for contemporary music in Darmstadt.
Nicoline Soeter
Composer Nicoline Soeter has
developed as a multidisciplinary artist the past few years, focusing
on the correlation between music and text. In 2016/2017, she was supported by New
Arrivals. Soeter has been commissioned by the Fonds Podiumkunsten, festival
Wintertuin, November Music, Cultura Nova and Transit, among others. Her works
have been performed at various festivals and concert venues, such as November
Music, Cross-linx and the Gaudeamus Music Week, and is published by Donemus
Publishing.

Tiptoe Company is a young ensemble focused on contemporary chamber music for surprising combinations of 'delicate' instruments such as acoustic guitar, double bass, recorder, harp and cello. ‘On tiptoe’ they discover musical borders - on the edge of silence, or in intense chamber music. TC works together with composers and artists as Patricia Alessandrini, Tim Mariën and Anneleen De Causmaecker. They’ve performed in major venues as November Music, MAfestival, and De Bijloke. Tiptoe Company is ensemble in residence at ChampdAction production platform.Tiptoe Company plays contemporary chamber music for surprising instrumental combinations.
