A surprising number of today’s contemporary composers are hooked on the music of  Franz Schubert.

One of them is German composer Jörg Widmann. In his Octet, Widmann luxuriates unabashedly in the lush sounds of Schubert’s eponymous work. Rather than making Schubert’s melodies into something ‘modern’, he answers the masterpiece from his own contemporary perspective: the techniques may be different, but the desire for connection is the same.

The past comes back to life in every one of Widmann’s notes, simmered in the Romantic, dished up with a dash of modernism

Performers

CAROUSEL Chamber Music Ensemble

In 2019 CAROUSEL joined the scene. Led by clarinettist Annelien Van Wauwe, the twelve-member group immediately distinguished itself through its youthful spirit and incisive, witty playing. Their programming takes risks in the same way their playing does, which makes them a great asset on the international music scene.
