The recorder may not be the first instrument you think of when someone mentions new music, but in the hands of Apsara they turn into the most fascinating sources for a contemporary sonic fantasy.
The programme includes a premiere by Jasper Vanpaemel and work by Paul Craenen and Christophe Guiraud.

Composers

Jasper Vanpaemel
Already at an early age Jasper Vanpaemel (b. 1986) was influenced by a wide variety of musical genres. From 2004 to 2013 he studied piano & composition with Jan Michiels, Peter Swinnen & Franklin Gyselinck at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. In 2009 Jasper studied electronic music (sonology) at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague with Richard Barrett and Kees Tazelaar.
Jasper’s compositions include original works and arrangements, both solo and ensemble pieces, varying between traditional instrumentations and interdiscliplinary multimedia set-ups. As a performing musician Jasper is active in various fields. With Jasper Braet he explores new ways of dynamic and aesthetic expression and performance.

Paul Craenen
Paul Craenen is a research professor, composer and music curator and a frequently demanded expert at the intersection of artistic practice, education and research. He studied piano and chamber music at the Lemmens Institute, Leuven and taught piano and experimental music at various music schools and intermedia studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Since the late 1990s, he has also been active as a composer, sound artist and researcher. He has been director of Musica, a Flemish organisation for art education, from 2012 to 2018. In early 2018 he was appointed Research Professor and head of the lectorate Music, Education and Society at the Royal Conservatory The Hague. He is also a guest lecturer at Leiden University.

Christophe Guiraud
Ars Subtilior (14th century) and Noise: the two inspirations of Christophe Guiraud, like two rivers woven into a writing of great power. The young French composer is the link between the most accomplished scholarly music and some radical aspects of noise.
Performers

Apsara
APSARA is an ensemble, founded in 2000, with a variable line up, centred around the recorder. The musicians keep searching for uncommon music, unheard sounds and new combinations with other instruments or media. Apsara is Ines Rasbach, Katelijne Lanneau and Tomma Wessel.
