Flat Time Trilogy, the title of this concert originates with Óscar Escudero and Belenish Moreno-Gil. Their multimedia compositions OST, POV and HOC always start a dialogue between a soloist (voice, saxophone, percussion) and the virtual world in an intense mix of music, multimedia and theatrical elements. Good for three exciting explorations of the ambiguous relationship between the soloist’s reality and their digital polar opposite in which it gets embroiled. The three solo pieces are accompanied by ensemble pieces by Igor Silva and Karel Stulens which use the TV culture and swiping on smartphones as their respective points of departure. In short, this is ideal material for the young, digital-native generation of Flanders’ Nemø Ensemble.

Composers

Óscar Escudero & Belenish Moreno-Gil

Óscar Escudero and Belenish Moreno-Gil are an artistic duo focused on contemporary music theater. Their works focus on topics such as digital platforms as ideology, ethical discussions derived from individual monitoring or deep fake. It crystallizes in productions, which create a mix between physical and virtual spaces, where the former-analogical concepts of “body”, “time” or “stage” turn into total representations.

Karel Stulens

Karel Stulens (°1997) is an Antwerp-based composer of new arts and music. His works range from orchestral and chamber works, mainly with performative and multi-media components, to interactive video’s and conceptual music. Research and questions regarding stereotypes, traditionalism and institutional mechanisms are the main foundations for creating new work. Stulens sees the concept of composing as ‘(re)working with components’. By this, his work is often communicative with the global archive, phenomenons from our contemporary society as well as found footage (mainly from the internet).

Performers

Nemø Ensemble

Nemø ensemble was founded in September 2017 and performs contemporary, experimental music. The collective aims to connect existing repertoire with pieces by young artists that are not afraid of crossing boundaries between different genres and artistic disciplines. The group challenges the conventional concert format by exploring different forms of presentation. This gives rise to immersive performances that overcome the distance between those who listen and those who perform. For Nemø, art means bringing people together in a context outside the rush of everyday life.
