In Umva! Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman puts her Rwandan grandfather, the 112-year-old Kanyoni Ladislas, at the centre. In the course of his long life as a traditional doctor and hunter he witnessed Rwanda transform through colonisation, the struggle for independence, genocides and post-war bloodbaths into the fragile country it is today. Using headphones and 3D sound, Lierman will immerse you in a hybrid sound world with instrumental and vocal music, sound effects, ‘Afrique concrète’ and abstract electronics, between radio art and storytelling.

Composers

Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman

Fascinated by the narrative power of abstract sound and music, Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman often adds dramatic and documentary elements to a music compositional structure (or just the other way around). Her oeuvre is therefore multidisciplinary and balances itself between radio art, installation art, performance art, voice art and composition.

The common thread is her vast collection of unique field recordings and soundscapes from rural and urban contemporary East Africa. Sound by sound Lierman transforms and models all those self-collected sounds into something she describes as "Afrique Concrète".

Performers

Silbersee

Silbersee is a Dutch kaleidoscopic company for groundbreaking music theater and opera productions. It is rooted in opera but opens its windows and doors to idiosyncratic talents from a wide variety of genres and disciplines to breathe new life into the opera genre. Using the voice as primal instrument, it gives sound to what needs to be heard: themes such as inclusion, ecology and artificial intelligence.
