A cello, and amplifier and a bunch of effects: the British cellist and composer Oliver Coates needs no more than that to sculpt sizzling layers of sound, hypnotic loops and a good measure of ‘distortion’. A nocturnal cello party with music that hovers somewhere between minimalism and Radiohead.
As a solo performer using amplified cello and tape effects, Oliver Coates has toured as an opening act for Thom Yorke across Europe and the US. He’s increasingly working as an ambient artist exploring drone, digital loopers and distortion. He writes and records music for film, TV and theatre and moves continuously between roles of composer, performer, experimental musician and record producer.
