That Séverine Ballon is one of today’s most adventurous cellists is evident from this ambitious programme. Along with the electronics wizards of Centre Henri Pousseur, she’ll perform three brand-new works written for her many and varied talents. Her talent as a composer will also be showcased along with works by Annelies Van Parys and Sam Hayden.

Annelies Van Parys
Annelies Van Parys (1975) is one of the leading composers in Belgium. She writes solo and chamber music as well as large orchestral compositions. Since 2007, as composer in residence at Muziektheater Transparant, she has written many works for music theatre. A genre for which she has a strong penchant.

Séverine Ballon
Deeply engaged in the development of her repertoire, cellist and composer Séverine Ballon's practice draws as much on key works from the repertoire as on her numerous collaborations with contemporary composers, working in the intimacy of sound fabrics. She has premiered many solo works, including compositions by Rebecca Saunders, Chaya Czernowin, Mauro Lanza and Philippe Leroux. She perfected her contemporary cello technique with cellists such as Siegfried Palm, Pierre Strauch and Rohan de Saram.

Sam Hayden
Sam Hayden studied composition with none other than Martin Butler, Michael Finnissy, Jonathan Harvey, Louis Andriessen and Brian Ferneyhough. His work utilises computer-assisted compositional techniques combining spectralist and stochastic approaches.
Recent commissions include compositions for BBC Symphony Orchestra, Séverine Ballon, Ensemble Mosaik and Quatuor Diotima. Hayden is Professor of Composition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
