Juliet Fraser & Mark Knoop
Norwegian composer Øyvind Torvund will unveil his plans for operas of the future using projections of pencil drawings. Of course, these plans are unworkable, and they blithely ignore the laws of physics and acoustics. Expect absurd humour, un- bridled imagination, a hefty dose of samples and the dramatic flair of soprano Juliet Fraser and pianist / keyboardist Mark Knoop as they reveal what is in all of these plans.
Performers
Juliet Fraser & Mark Knoop
British soprano Juliet Fraser and pianist/conductor Mark Knoop have been performing as a duo for over a decade. During that time, they have commissioned new works from composers such as Matthew Shlomowitz, Michael Finnissy and Laurence Crane. Øyvind Torvund’s Plans for Future Operas was written for them in 2022 and premiered at Munich Biennale. They have since performed it at festivals such as Borealis Festival (Bergen), MaerzMusik (Berlin) and Darmstadt Ferienkurse.
Composer
Øyvind Torvund
Alongside regular musical studies in Oslo and Berlin, Norwegian composer Øyvind Torvund played guitar in rock and improvising groups. Contrasts, juxtapositions and completely opposite perspectives interest him: sounds from rock or from everyday life (or nature) occurring in chamber music, simplicity in a complex context, improvisation coexisting with exact notation, music combined with film or projections, seriousness in counterpoint with humor.
