Screams of Despair - Concert 3
The day’s final concert gets off to a carefree and bouncy start: Shostakovich’s Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and String Orchestra provides a wonderful feast of manual dexterity and heavenly spun-out melodies, with former winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition, Lukáš Vondráček, at the piano. In the following piece, the same composer’s Fifteenth Symphony, written forty years later, clouds darken the sky. It is clear that the composer’s soul has become tormented and full of doubt. Toy soldiers are trampled upon by frightening battalions, frisky dances take on a macabre edge, and finally Shostakovich even calls on Richard Wagner for help letting Death into his symphony. It’s an absolutely matchless work, and it’s in the best possible hands with the Brussels Philharmonic and conductor Kazushi Ono.

Performers
Brussels Philharmonic
As a symphony orchestra founded in 1935 under the auspices of the Belgian public broadcaster, unveiling the symphonic world as best they can is deep in Brussels Philharmonic’s DNA. By innovating while maintaining full respect for the value of the past, they keep the symphonic music of the past, present and future relevant and inspiring. They do this from the historic Studio 4 at Flagey in Brussels, together with their music director Kazushi Ono.
Kazushi Ono
Kazushi Ono’s musical personality was formed by the cultures of both Japan, where he was born, and Europe, where he studied. His work reflects both influences and crosses styles and forms, from Baroque to new commissions and from orchestral to opera. He has worked in opera houses and concert halls all over the world and from the season ’22-’23 onwards he is active as Music Director of Brussels Philharmonic.
Lukáš Vondráček
His natural musicality and remarkable technique have marked out Czech pianist Lukáš Vondráček. In 2016 he won the International Queen Elisabeth Piano Competition. In a career spanning over two decades, he has travelled the world and performed with the foremost orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony and London Symphony Orchestra’s, with conductors such as Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Stéphane Denève.
Andrei Kavalinski
Currently principal trumpet of the Orchestre National de France, Andrei Kavalinski has previously held the same position at Brussels Philharmonic. Passionate about solo repertoire and chamber music, he often works with ensembles such as the Belgian Brass Ensemble and I SOLISTI, as well as with contemporary composers. Many of them have dedicated compositions to him.
