Øyvind Torvund, Thomas Meadowcroft

The Norwegian ensemble asamisimasa will make their Transit debut with a sampler of music from the Far North. Thomas Meadowcroft’s melancholy Love Songs Without Subjects emanates the vibe of the better ‘Nordic Noir’. This year, Øyvind Torvund will juxtapose his absurdist sense of humour alongside the gravitas. Altogether, it is a concert somewhere between contemporary music and dark indie-pop.

Since then, the Norwegian ensemble has premiered more than a hundred cross-media works especially written for them, often contextualized with classical repertoire and historical avant-garde work. asamisimasa has collaborated with composers such as Helmut Lachenmann, Alvin Lucier, Brian Ferneyhough, Joanna Bailie, Simon Steen-Andersen and Matthew Shlomowitz.

Composers

Øyvind Torvund

Alongside his musical studies in Oslo and Berlin, the Norwegian composer Øyvind Torvund played guitar in rock and improvising groups. His music assembles disparate materials: sounds from rock or from everyday life occurring in chamber music, simplicity in a complex context, improvisation coexisting with exact notation, music combined with film or projections, seriousness in counterpoint with humor. Categories are split open or blurred, habits unbent.

Thomas Meadowcroft

Thomas Meadowcroft makes music for the concert hall, radio, and theater. He has worked with a variety of orchestras and ensembles including the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Yarn/Wire. His work employs a range of musical techniques and styles depending on context and format. Meadowcroft completed postgraduate studies in composition with George Crumb and he has lived in Berlin since 1998.
