Jan Michiels

Kris Defoort, Luc Brewaeys

Two recent classics of Flemish piano repertoire are here side by side. And who else should we ask but Jan Michiels to reconcile the refined homages of Kris Defoort’s Dedicatio cycle with the imposing pianism of Luc Brewaeys’ Pyramids in Siberia?

Performer

Jan Michiels

Pianist Jan Michiels has been known for his very personal and multi-layered approach to the piano repertoire, combining old and new in always changing perspectives. He composes his programs through a continuous dialogue with living music history. As such, he worked closely with composers such as Kurtág, Lachenmann, Goeyvaerts and Defoort. Michiels is Professor piano at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel and guestprofessor at the Universität der Künste Berlin.

Composers

Kris Defoort

Kris Defoort — composer, pianist, improvisor — is a major figure in the European jazz music and classical opera scene. By creating a highly individual musical language that redefines musical traditions in an original way, his music is characterised by the encounter between classical and jazz music, and between written compositions and improvisation. As an accomplished musical colourist, he therefore disposes over a unique sound palette.

Luc Brewaeys

Luc Brewaeys’ (1959-2015) oeuvre includes eight symphonies, two string quartets, chamber and solo music, electroacoustic works as well as two operas. He received many commissions both in Belgium and abroad. His music is best described as spectral-symphonic with lyrical accents (mainly in later works). Brewaeys was also conductor, pianist and recording producer at the VRT (Flemish Radio & Television).
