Uiteindelijk ging Cyborg Flesh in 2025 in première.

Have you met our Festival artist-in-residence, Brecht Valckenaers, yet?
In 2024, the young Leuven-based pianist Brecht Valckenaers (born 2000 in Leuven) made an impressive debut at Festival 20·21. With a carefully curated Ligeti programme and a brilliant performance, he made a deep impression on the festival audience and our artistic team. He was immediately appointed Festival Artist-in-Residence at Festival 20·21 and was awarded two commissions.
SIGN O’ THE TIMES
The idea that music is supposed to tell us something about the spirit of the age in which it was written is of course a cliché. After all, music is universal, meant to endure for eternity, isn’t it? Although there’s something to be said about that last bit, even ‘immortal’ music (Bach, say?) is inextricably bound to its time and place, not just in terms of style and technique but also the worldview that emanates from it. It’s intriguing to think about how we might look back in a few decades (or centuries?) at the perspective of 2026 as shown in the Transit programming.
E PLURIBUS UNUM?
Europe today is caught between two fires. To the east, the war in Ukraine is making it clear that not everyone automatically appreciates the birth of new democracies. To the west, the developments in the US are revealing to a staggering degree how much the survival of even centuries-old democracies cannot be taken for granted. While the horror in Ukraine has by now peaked, the events in America are primarily waking us up to the fragility of an apparently established peace. Every day, we observe how minor violations of law and of common decency undermine a community’s stability.
Against the War: aangrijpend, rauw en hoopvol

Ecological imagination
Artists (much like scientists, by the way) find themselves often represented in the popular imagination as a bit unworldly. The composer in the attic, locked in extreme artistic concentration and thus leaving behind all awareness of the outside world is a cliché that seems hard to get rid of.
Open your ears, open your mind
Dmitri Shostakovich, one of the central composers in this year’s festival, was given a sharp reprimand by the Soviet authorities in 1948. He and other ‘modernists’ were accused of writing music that insufficiently expressed Russia’s greatness. For the political elite music had to be cheerful or not exist at all. It could not be played or heard unless it sang the praises of the unconditionally blissful Russian people, preferably with the composer adding a dash of bombast and nationalistic bluster, in a spirit of ‘Make Russia Great Again’.

Prelude concert and lecture to mark the 150th anniversary of Arnold Schoenberg & Charles Ives
1874 was a vintage year for Western music. Vienna saw the birth of Arnold Schoenberg – on 13 September, exactly 150 years ago – whose leap into atonality permanently shifted the boundaries of our musical consciousness.

Beyond the Imperative of Pleasure
More and more in the last few years, classical music has been increasingly promoted something purely to enjoy. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying something in and of itself, but perhaps we might be just a tiny bit more ambitious. After all, music has more to offer, and people do too. Festival 20·21’s aim is to encourage that tiny bit of ambition – of course, keeping open ears and an open mind.
